That Day We Ran By the Water
Thin Sulphite Paper, Pastels, Colored Pencils
190 x 50cm
2024
I conducted extensive research on my memories of rain and the sea, turning them into several small paintings before merging all these memories into this large piece. I chose thin tracing paper because my memories are fragile—blurred and fragmented. When creating this work, I didn’t use any preliminary sketches; instead, I layered different colors and lines meditatively each day. My perception of each memory changed daily, so by the time I completed this painting, it felt as though I had finished writing a story.

Sea, Folkstone, 2024
I love spending time by the water. I grew up by the sea and have always enjoyed visiting various watersides. These places hold many memories for me, each one unique—some filled with happiness, while others carry a subtle hint of melancholy, much like the water during the blue hour, when the sky and the sea are both a rich, deep shade of blue.
Material experiment

I have always wanted to use materials to capture the texture of water. I purchased different types of tracing paper and repeatedly folded them, creating creases that resemble waves. I also believe the translucent quality of tracing paper aligns perfectly with my vision of water—clear and transparent.
Sketch experiment

I love sketching to capture my memories, and these are memories of water. They emerge in my mind and linger, so I record them through my drawings.
